Digital dentistry is no longer something practices are preparing for, it's already here. And as the technology changes how care is delivered, it's also changing what belongs in your supply room.

Understanding those shifts helps you avoid two common and costly mistakes: continuing to stock supplies your workflow no longer needs, and failing to stock the consumables your new equipment requires.

The technology landscape in 2026

The numbers make clear how fast adoption has accelerated. The global digital dentistry market is projected to grow from $5.47 billion in 2026 to $11.13 billion by 2034, a compound annual growth rate of 9.3%. In North America specifically, 85% of dental practices now use digital X-ray sensors, while intraoral scanner ownership among general dentists has reached 35% and is climbing steadily.

CBCT has become a structural part of clinical workflows for implant planning, endodontic diagnosis, and orthodontic assessment. A shift that's reflected in how rapidly practices are upgrading from conventional 2D radiography to 3D imaging platforms. According to the ADA Health Policy Institute's latest survey on dentist AI usage, a further 25% of dentists who aren't currently using AI plan to adopt it for imaging and diagnostics, signaling that adoption is still accelerating, not plateauing.

What does all of this mean for your supply order? Quite a bit, depending on where your practice sits on the adoption curve.

What's coming out of the supply room

As digital workflows replace analog ones, certain supply categories naturally decline in volume, sometimes to zero.

Traditional impression materials. Practices that have fully adopted intraoral scanning no longer need conventional impression materials for most restorative cases. Intraoral scanners are rapidly replacing traditional impressions as the standard of care. Patients who have experienced digital scanning are often reluctant to return to conventional trays. Some traditional diagnostic tools. AI-assisted imaging software is increasingly performing functions that once required manual chair time, reducing the need for certain analog diagnostic supplies.

What needs to go into the supply room

The flip side is that digital workflows create demand for a new category of consumables that many practices understock. Often because they're newer, less familiar, and not yet part of the standard ordering routine.

CAD/CAM and milling consumables. Chairside milling systems require a steady supply of milling blocks in a range of shades and materials; zirconia, lithium disilicate, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), as well as milling burs that wear with use and need regular replacement. CAD/CAM milling systems are projected to grow at 14.5% CAGR through 2034, which means supply demand for these consumables is growing accordingly.

3D printing resins and materials. Practices using 3D printers for surgical guides, night guards, or provisional restorations need a consistent supply of printing resins, which have specific storage requirements and shelf lives. Running out mid-case is a real operational risk if these aren't tracked as closely as traditional consumables.

Intraoral scanner accessories Scan tips and sleeves, protective covers, and calibration materials need regular replenishment. Because they're newer additions to the supply room, they're often managed informally, which leads to the same kind of mid-procedure shortage that prophy paste shortages caused a decade ago.

Digital workflow support materials. Items like retraction cord, bite registration materials optimized for digital workflows, and cleaning solutions for digital equipment are easy to overlook but create disruption when they run out.
